Type species: ¤ Actinomadura madurae (Vincent 1894) Lechevalier and Lechevalier 1968 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. actis actinos, a ray; N.L. n. Madura, Madura, name of a province in India; N.L. fem. n. Actinomadura, referring to a micro-organism first described as the causative agent of "Madura foot" disease.

Notes:
1 In the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, the genus Actinomadura is cited as Actinomadura Lechevalier and Lechevalier 1968, and the reference is the following: Lechevalier, H.A. and M.P. Lechevalier. 1968 in Prauser, H. (ed). The actinomycetales. Sept. 1968. VEB Gustav Fischer Verlag, Jena. pp.393-405.
The description of Actinomadura was published in the abstracts of the symposium in Jena in 1968. However, the book "The Actinomycetales" was not published by VEB Gustav Fischer Verlag until 1970. According to Rule 25b of the Bacteriological Code (1975 Revision) and (1990 Revision), communication of a new name at a meeting or in minutes of a meeting is not accepted as effective. Consequently, there is an error in the Approved Lists and the correct citation should be Actinomadura Lechevalier and Lechevalier 1970. According to Rule 23a Note 4, only the Judicial Commission may correct the Approved Lists and the citation used in the LPSN is that which appears in the Approved Lists.
2 According to Zhang et al. 2001, Actinomadura Lechevalier and Lechevalier 1968, is an earlier heterotypic synonym of ¤ Excellospora Agre and Guzeva 1975 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note:
In the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, the species Actinomadura madurae is cited as Actinomadura madurae (Vincent 1894) Lechevalier and Lechevalier 1968, and the reference is the following: Lechevalier, H.A. and M.P. Lechevalier. 1968 in Prauser, H. (ed). The actinomycetales. Sept. 1968. VEB Gustav Fischer Verlag, Jena. pp.393-405.
The description of Actinomadura madurae was published in the abstracts of the symposium in Jena in 1968. Consequently, there is an error in the Approved Lists and the correct citation should be Actinomadura madurae (Vincent 1894) Lechevalier and Lechevalier 1970.
