Etymology: N.L. neut. n. agarum, agar; L. part. adj. vorans, devouring; N.L. masc. n. (N.L. masc. part. adj. used as a substantive) agarivorans, agar-devouring.

Note: The Neo-Latin adjective (used as a substantive) Agarivorans may be in the masculine, feminine, or neuter gender. The gender of the genus name is not provided in the paper by Kurahashi and Yokota 2004. However, the epithet of the type species (albus) is in the masculine gender and Agarivorans must be in the masculine gender.
