Type species: ¤ Alkanibacter difficilis Friedrich and Lipski 2008.
Etymology: N.L. n. alkanum, saturated hydrocarbon; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Alkanibacter, rod assimilating alkanes.

Alkanibacter difficilis Friedrich and Lipski 2008, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain MN154.3 = DSM 14804 = LMG 22842.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. difficilis, difficult, because it is difficult to cultivate.
