Type species: ¤ Amphritea atlantica Gärtner et al. 2008.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Amphritea, from Gr. fem. n. Amphrite, a nymph of the ocean in Greek mythology, referring to the habitat of the bacteria.

Etymology: L. gen. n. balenae, of a whale.
