Etymology: N.L. hydrogenum (from Gr. n. hudôr, water; and Gr. v. gennaô, to produce), hydrogen (that which produces water, so called because it forms water when exposed to oxygen); L. masc. suff. -alis, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. masc. adj. hydrogenalis, pertaining to hydrogen, because this organism produces hydrogen.
