Validation List N° 9 in IJSEM Online
Note:
Arthrobacter ilicis was first proposed as Arthrobacter ilicis (Mandel et al. 1961) Collins et al. 1982, comb. nov. [basonym ¤ Corynebacterium ilicis Mandel et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980)], type strain ATCC 14264 = NCPPB 1228.
Strain ATCC 14264 = DSM 20138 = NCPPB 1228 does not exhibit one of the original diagnostic features of ¤ Corynebacterium ilicis, namely pathogenesis on American holly (Ilex opaca), and cannot represent this species.
Following a Request for an Opinion [1], the Judicial Commission [2] has therefore ruled (i) that ATCC 14264 = DSM 20138 = NCPPB 1228 cannot serve as the type of the species ¤ Corynebacterium ilicis, but may serve as the type of a different taxon, ¤ Arthrobacter ilicis Collins et al. 1982; and (ii) that the name ¤ Corynebacterium ilicis Mandel et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980) is represented by the type strain ICMP 2608 = ICPB CI144.
Consequently, (i) Arthrobacter ilicis is not a homotypic synonym of ¤ Corynebacterium ilicis Mandel et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980); (ii) reference to Mandel et al. 1961 in the author citation Arthrobacter ilicis (Mandel et al. 1961) Collins et al. 1982 is to be removed; (iii) Arthrobacter ilicis Collins et al. 1982 is a new species, not a new combination as cited in the Validation List n° 9; and (iv) any reference to Mandel et al. 1961 is not to be included in any future descriptions.
