Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
Bdellovibrio Stolp and Starr 1963, genus. (Type genus of the order ¤ Bdellovibrionales Garrity et al. 2006; type genus of the family ¤ Bdellovibrionaceae Garrity et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus Stolp and Starr 1963 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. bdella, leech, sucker; L. v. vibro, to set in tremulous motion, move to and fro, vibrate; N.L. masc. n. vibrio, that which vibrates, and also a bacterial genus name of bacteria possessing a curved rod shape (Vibrio); N.L. n. Bdellovibrio, a leechlike vibrio.

Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus Stolp and Starr 1963, species. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 15356 = DSM 50701 = NCIB (now NCIMB) 9529.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AJ292759.
Etymology: L. neut. n. bacterium, rod or staff and, in biology, a bacterium (so called because the first ones observed were rod-shaped); L. v. voro, to eat, to devour; N.L. masc. adj. bacteriovorus, bacteria devouring.

GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AF084852.
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. starrii, of Starr, named after M.P. Starr, an investigator of the bdellovibrios.
