Type species: ¤ Belnapia moabensis Reddy et al. 2006.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Belnapia, after J. Belnap, in honour of her contributions to the study of biological soil crusts (BSCs).

Belnapia moabensis Reddy et al. 2006, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain CP2C = ATCC BAA-1043 = DSM 16746.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AJ871428.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. moabensis, pertaining to Moab, UT, USA, where the type strain was isolated.
