Bergeyella Vandamme et al. 1994, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Bergeyella zoohelcum (Holmes et al. 1987) Vandamme et al. 1994.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Bergeyella, named in honor of David H. Bergey, who created, together with his coworkers, the genus Flavobacterium in 1923, for his contributions to the taxononly of the genus Flavobacterium and related bacteria.

Basonym: ¤ Weeksella zoohelcum Holmes et al. 1987.
Etymology: Gr. n zoon, an animal; Gr. neut. n. helkos, a wound; N.L. gen. pl. n. zoohelcum, of animal wounds, because strains are isolated from cat and dog bites and scratches.
