Etymology: L. fem. n. blatta, an insect that shuns the light, the cockroach, chafer, moth, etc.; L. neut. n. bacterium, rod; N.L. neut. n. Blattabacterium, an endosymbiotic bacterium harbored by cockroaches and one termite species.
