Type species: ¤ Acetogenium kivui Leigh and Wolfe 1983.
Etymology: L. n. acetum, vinegar; L. suff. genius -a -um (from L. v. gigno, to produce), producing; N.L. neut. n. acetogenium, vinegar producing.

Note: Collins et al. 1994 propose to transfer ¤ Acetogenium kivui Leigh and Wolfe 1983 (the type species of the genus Acetogenium) to the genus ¤ Thermoanaerobacter as ¤ Thermoanaerobacter kivui (Leigh and Wolfe 1983) Collins et al. 1994, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Acetogenium to ¤ Thermoanaerobacter.
