Synonym: "Sapromyces" Sabin 1941.
Etymology: Gr. pref. a-, not, without; Gr. n. cholê, bile; Gr. neut. n. plasma, anything formed or moulded, image, figure; N.L. neut. n. Acholeplasma, intended to mean that cholesterol, a constituent of bile, is not required.
