Type species: ¤ Acidiferrobacter thiooxydans Hallberg et al. 2011.
Etymology: N.L. n. acidum (from L. adj. acidus, sour), an acid; L. n. ferrum, iron; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Acidiferrobacter, an acid-loving, ferrous iron-oxidizing rod.

Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; N.L. v. oxydo (from Gr. adj. oxus, sharp),to make acid, to oxidize; N.L. part. adj. thiooxydans, oxidizing sulfur.
