Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. venustensis, from 'Portus Venustus', Elegant Port, one of the ancient Latin names of Santa Pola in Roman times, a coastal town south of Alicante, the nearest town to the sites from which the two strains of the species were retrieved. It might also refer to the elegant and slender aspects of the rods.
