Etymology: L. n. aqua, water; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Aquabacter, aquatic rod.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. spiritensis, pertaining to Spirit Lake, Washington, USA, from which the strain was isolated.
