Type species: ¤ Balneola vulgaris Urios et al. 2006.
Etymology: M.L. fem. n. Balneola, the ancient name of Banyuls, referring to the area of isolation of the first characterized strain.

Etymology: N.L. n. alkali, alkali; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. fem. adj. alkaliphila, loving alkaline conditions.
