Etymology: N.L. n. acidum butyricum, butyric acid; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Butyricicoccus, coccoid-shaped bacterium that produces butyrate.
