Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
Caenibacterium Manaia et al. 2003, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Caenibacterium thermophilum Manaia et al. 2003.
Etymology: L. n. caenum, mud, sludge; L. neut. n. bacterium, rod; N.L. neut. n. Caenibacterium, a rod-shaped bacterium isolated from sludge.
Reference: MANAIA (C.M.), NUNES (O.C.) and NOGALES (B.): Caenibacterium thermophilum gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from a thermophilic aerobic digester of municipal sludge. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2003, 53, 1375-1382.

---> ¤ Schlegelella Elbanna et al. 2003.
Note: Lütke-Eversloh et al. 2004 propose that ¤ Caenibacterium thermophilum Manaia et al. 2003 (the type species of the genus Caenibacterium) be a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Schlegelella thermodepolymerans (the type species of the genus ¤ Schlegelella). According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Caenibacterium to ¤ Schlegelella.

Caenibacterium thermophilum Manaia et al. 2003, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain N2-680 = DSM 15264 = LMG 21760.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AJ512945.
Etymology: Gr. n. thermê, warm; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. neut. adj. thermophilum, loving warmth, thermophilic.
