Etymology: N.L. neut. n. chitinum, chitin; N.L. masc. n. bacter from Gr. n. bakteron, rod; N.L. masc. n. Chitinibacter, rod that degrades chitin.

Etymology: L. gen. n. alvei, of/from the bed of a river, referring to the location from where the type strain was isolated.
