Type species: ¤ Cryptobacterium curtum Nakazawa et al. 1999.
Etymology: Gr. adj. kruptos, hidden; L. neut. n. bacterium, a rod; N.L. neut. n. Cryptobacteriurn, a hidden rod-shaped bacterium.

Cryptobacterium curtum Nakazawa et al. 1999, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain 12-3 = ATCC 700683 = DSM 15641.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: CP001682 (complete genome).
Etymology: L. neut. adj. curtum, shortened (a shortened cell of this organism).
