Type species: ¤ Desulfatirhabdium butyrativorans Balk et al. 2008.
Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; N.L. n. sulfas -atis, sulfate; Gr. neut. n. rhabdium, a little rod; N.L. neut. n. Desulfatirhabdium, a sulfate-reducing small rod.
