Type species: ¤ Desulfitispora alkaliphila Sorokin and Muyzer 2010.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from, off, away; N.L. n. sulfis -itis, sulfite; N.L. fem. n. spora (from Gr. n. spora), a seed and in biology a spore; N.L. fem. n. Desulfitispora, spore-forming bacterium-reducing sulfite.

Etymology: Arabic article al, the; Arabic n. qaliy, ashes of saltwort, soda; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. fem. adj. alkaliphila, loving alkaline conditions.
