Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); L. masc. n. bulbus, a bulb, an onion; N.L. masc. n. Desulfobulbus, onion-shaped sulfate reducer.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. mediterraneus, midland, inland, remote from the sea, mediterranean (opp. to maritimus), and, in late Latin, used to refer to the Mediterranean Sea (Mediterraneum mare), pertaining to the habitat the organism was isolated from.

Note: At the time of publication, the type strain was not deposited in two publicly accessible service collections in different countries, and Desulfobulbus mediterraneus Sass et al. 2002 was not validly published [Rules 27(3) and 30]. However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Desulfobulbus mediterraneus Sass et al. 2002 is now considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.
