Type species: ¤ Desulfosalsimonas propionicica Kjeldsen et al. 2010.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. adj. salsus, salty, saline; L. fem. n. monas, unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Desulfosalsimonas, a sulfate-reducing monad that thrives in (hyper)saline environments.

Desulfosalsimonas propionicica Kjeldsen et al. 2010, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).

Etymology: N.L. n. acidum propionicum, propionic acid; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. propionicica, belonging to propionic acid.
