Type species: ¤ Diplorickettsia massiliensis Mediannikov et al. 2011.
Etymology: Gr. adj. diplos (or diploos), twofold, double; N.L. fem. n. Rickettsia, a bacterial generic name; N.L. fem. n. Diplorickettsia, doubled rickettsia, for the phenotypic resemblance of the isolated strain with rickettsiae shown by Gimenez staining.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. massiliensis of or belonging to Massilia, the Latin name of Marseille, France, were the organism was first grown, identified and characterized.
