Type species: ¤ Hyperthermus butylicus Zillig et al. 1991.
Etymology: Gr. prep. hyper, above; Gr. adj. thermos, hot; N.L. masc. n. Hyperthermus, an organism existing in a very hot environment.

Hyperthermus butylicus Zillig et al. 1991, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 700455 = DSM 5456 = JCM 9403.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. butylicus, butylic, referring to the production of butanol.
