Lactosphaera Janssen et al. 1995, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Lactosphaera pasteurii (Schink 1985) Janssen et al. 1995.
Etymology: L. n. lac lactis, milk; L. fem. n. sphaera, a sphere; N.L. fem. n. Lactosphaera, a sphere with lactic acid fermentation.

---> ¤ Trichococcus Scheff et al. 1984 emend. Liu et al. 2002.
Note: Liu et al. 2002 propose to transfer ¤ Lactosphaera pasteurii (Schink 1985) Janssen et al. 1995 (the type species of the genus Lactosphaera) to the genus ¤ Trichococcus as ¤ Trichococcus pasteurii (Schink 1985) Liu et al. 2002, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Lactosphaera to ¤ Trichococcus.

Lactosphaera pasteurii (Schink 1985) Janssen et al. 1995, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain KoTa2 = ATCC 35945 = CCUG 37395 = CIP 104580 = DSM 2381.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: X87150.
Basonym: ¤ Ruminococcus pasteurii Schink 1985.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. pasteurii, of Pasteur, referring to Louis Pasteur, who probably first enriched and observed this bacterium during studies on tartrate fermentation.
