Type genus: ¤ Methanococcus Kluyver and van Niel 1936 emend. Barker 1936 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Methanococcus, type genus of the family; suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Methanococcaceae, the Methanococcus family.
