Methanothermea Cavalier-Smith 2002, class. nov.
Type order: ¤ Methanococcales Balch and Wolfe 1981.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; Gr. n. thermê, heat; N.L. neut. pl. n. Methanothermea, a group of bacteria which generate methane and sometimes are hyperthermophiles.
