Moraxella Lwoff 1939, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Moraxellaceae Rossau et al. 1991).
Type species: ¤ Moraxella lacunata (Eyre 1900) Lwoff 1939 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonym: "Diplobacillus" McNab 1904.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Moraxella, named after V. Morax, a Swiss ophthalmologist who pioneered the recognition of the type species.

Note:
. In 1979, K. Bøvre [1] proposed to divide the genus Moraxella Lwoff 1939 into two subgenera: subgenus Moraxella (Lwoff 1939) Bøvre 1979 and subgenus Branhamella (Catlin 1970) Bøvre 1979.
. However, the names Moraxella (subgen. Moraxella) and Moraxella (subgen. Branhamella) were not included in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names [2, 3]. In 2001, J.P. Euzéby [4] requested that the subgenera Moraxella and Branhamella and the nine species included in these subgenera be validly published.
. The Judicial Opinion 83 [5] ruled that the subgenus names Moraxella subgen. Moraxella and Moraxella subgen. Branhamella should have been included on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names.
. In July 2008, B.J. Tindall [6] challenged Opinion 83.
. On 4 August 2008, the Opinion 83 was reviewed by the Judicial Commission [5]. The Minute 18 (3) of the meeting of the Judicial Commission, 3, 4 and 6 August 2008, Istanbul, Turkey, states the following [5]:
(i) It was agreed that these names were not in accordance with the Rules of the Code at the time the Approved Lists were drawn up.
(ii) Since the names were not in accordance with the Code, they could not have been added to the lists.
. Consequently, the names Moraxella (subgen. Moraxella) and Moraxella (subgen. Branhamella) are deleted from the LPSN.
