Type species: ¤ Oceanicaulis alexandrii Strömpl et al. 2003.
Etymology: L. masc. n. oceanus, the ocean; L. masc. n. caulis, stalk, referring to a prostheca; N.L. masc. n. Oceanicaulis, stalk(ed organism) from the ocean.

Oceanicaulis alexandrii Strömpl et al. 2003, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain C116-18 = DSM 11625 = NCIMB 13905.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AJ309862.
Etymology: L. n. Alexandrium, the (dinoflagellate) from Alexandria; L. masc. gen. alexandrii, of Alexandrium, the source of isolation and postulated natural habitat.
