Etymology: L. n. oliva, olive; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Olivibacter, a rod-shaped bacterium from olives/olive processing by-product.

Etymology: L. n. oleum, oil; L. part. adj. degradans, returning to the original order, referring to the ability of the type strain to degrade oil (hydrocarbons); N.L. part. adj. oleidegradans, capable of degrading oil (hydrocarbons).
