Type species: ¤ Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi 1920) Tamura et al. 1995.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Orientia (from L. n. oriens -entis, the East, Orient), the Orient, the area where the organisms are widely distributed.

Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi 1920) Tamura et al. 1995, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus).

Basonym: ¤ Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi 1920) Ogata 1931 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Japanese n. tsutsugamushi (from two Japanese ideographs transliterated tsutuga something small and dangerous, and mushi a creature, now known to be a mite), popular name of the disease caused by this species, generally interpreted to mean "mite disease"; N.L. gen. n. tsutsugamushi, of a mite disease (of tsutsugamushi).
Other synonyms: "Theileria tsutsugamushi" Hayashi 1920, "Rickettsia orientalis" Nagayo et al. 1930, "Rickettsia akamushi" Kawamura and Imagawa 1931.
