Type species: ¤ Ornithinicoccus hortensis Groth et al. 1999.
Etymology: N.L. n. ornithinum, ornithine (an amino acid named after the Gr. n. ornithos, bird); N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Ornithinicoccus, a coccus with ornithine.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. hortensis, of or belonging to a garden, the place where the organism was isolated.
