Pannonibacter Borsodi et al. 2003, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Pannonibacter phragmitetus Borsodi et al. 2003.
Etymology: L. n. Pannonia, Roman province in what is now Hungary, also referring to 'Pannon lakes', shallow soda lakes found in the western part of Hungary; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Pannonibacter, rod-shaped microbe from a Hungarian soda lake.

Pannonibacter phragmitetus Borsodi et al. 2003, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. phragmitetus, of the plant association Scirpo-Phragmitetum, the habitat of the micro-organism.

Note: The 16S rRNA gene sequence data, DNA-DNA hybridization results, G+C content determinations, cellular fatty acid analysis and biochemical characterizations prove that strains of Achromobacter groups B and E belong to Pannonibacter phragmitetus (i.e. the three taxa represent a single species). Whilst Pannonibacter phragmitetus was described in 2003 from a Hungarian soda lake, it had been observed in human blood cultures in the UK since 1975.
Reference: HOLMES (B.), SEGERS (P.), COENYE (T.), VANCANNEYT (M.) and VANDAMME (P.): Pannonibacter phragmitetus, described from a Hungarian soda lake in 2003, had been recognized several decades earlier from human blood cultures as Achromobacter groups B and E.
