Type species: ¤ Saccharococcus thermophilus Nystrand 1984.
Etymology: Gr. n. sakchâr, sugar; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Saccharococcus, the sugar coccus, a coccus isolated from beet sugar extraction.

Etymology: L. adj. caldus, hot; N.L. neut. n. xylosum, xylose; N.L. adj. lyticus -a -um (from Gr. adj. lutikos -ê -on), able to loose, able to dissolve; N.L. masc. adj. caldoxylosilyticus, hot and xylose-degrading.
