Type species: ¤ Saccharophagus degradans Ekborg et al. 2005.
Etymology: Gr. n. saccharon, sugar; N.L. masc. adj. phagus (from Gr. masc. adj. phagos), glutton; N.L. masc. n. Saccharophagus, sugar-devourer.

Saccharophagus degradans Ekborg et al. 2005, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain 2-40 = ATCC 43961 = DSM 17024.

Etymology: L. part. adj. degradans, bringing back into the former order, used to refer to the ability of the type strain to degrade several complex carbohydrates.
