Sarcobium Drozanski 1991, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Sarcobium lyticum Drozanski 1991.
Etymology: Gr. n. sarx sarkos, flesh; Gr. n. bios, life; N.L. neut. n. Sarcobium, that which lives in the sarcode or flesh [cytoplasm].

---> ¤ Legionella Brenner et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note: Hookey et al. 1996 propose to transfer ¤ Sarcobium lyticum Drozanski 1991 (the type species of the genus Sarcobium) to the genus ¤ Legionella as ¤ Legionella lytica (Drozanski 1991) Hookey et al. 1996, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Sarcobium to ¤ Legionella.

Sarcobium lyticum Drozanski 1991, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain L2 = PCM 2298. In the absence of cultivation in pure culture, the description in the paper by Drozanski 1991 forms the nomenclatural type (Rules 18a and 18f).
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: X97364.
Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. lyticum (from Gr. neut. adj. lutikon), able to loose, able to dissolve.
Reference: DROZANSKI (W.J.): Sarcobium lyticum gen. nov., sp. nov., an obligate intracellular bacterial parasite of small free-living amoebae. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1991, 41, 82-87.
