Type species: ¤ Sphaerotilus natans Kützing 1833 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonym: "Cladothrix" Cohn 1875.
Etymology: Gr. n. sphaira (Latin transliteration sphaera), a sphere; Gr. masc. n. tilos, anything plucked, intended to mean flock (in Greek, the noun tila means "flocks or motes floating in the air"); N.L. masc. n. Sphaerotilus, spherical flock.

Sphaerotilus hippei Gridneva et al. 2011, sp. nov.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. hippei, of Hippe, named after H. Hippe, a German microbiologist, who isolated this strain.

Sphaerotilus montanus Gridneva et al. 2011, sp. nov.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. montanus, of or belonging to a mountain, pertaining to an iron spring, located in the foothills of the North Caucasus, Russia, the place from where the strain was isolated.
