Type species: ¤ Sporotalea propionica Boga et al. 2007.
Etymology: Gr. n. spora, a seed and in biology a spore; L. fem. n. talea, a thin rod or stick; N.L. fem. n. Sporotalea, a spore-forming, stick-shaped bacterium.

Etymology: N.L. neut. n. acidum propionicum, propionic acid; N.L. fem. adj. propionica, pertaining to propionic acid, which the organism produces from various substrates.
