Type species: ¤ Sulfophobococcus zilligii Hensel et al. 1997.
Etymology: L. n. sulfur, sulfur; Gr. v. phobeô, to be seized with fear, to fear, to avoid; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Sulfophobococcus, the sulfur fearing coccus.
