Sutterella Wexler et al. 1996, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Sutterellaceae Morotomi et al. 2011).
Type species: ¤ Sutterella wadsworthensis Wexler et al. 1996.
Etymology: N.L. dim. fem. n. Sutterella, named in memory of Vera Sutter, respected colleague and director of the Wadsworth Anaerobe Laboratory for twenty years.

Etymology: L. adj. parvus, small; L. adj. ruber -bra -brum, red; N.L. fem. adj. parvirubra, small and red, referring to cell size and cell mass colour.
