Syntrophobacter Boone and Bryant 1984, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Syntrophobacterales Kuever et al. 2006; type genus of the family ¤ Syntrophobacteraceae Kuever et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Syntrophobacter wolinii Boone and Bryant 1984.
Etymology: Gr. adj. suntrophos, having grown up with one; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Synthrophobacter, a rod which feeds together with (an another species).

Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans Harmsen et al. 1998, sp. nov.

GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: X82874.
Etymology: N.L. n. acidum fumaricum, fumaric acid (fumarate); N.L. v. oxido (from Gr. adj. oxus, acid or sour and in combined words indicating oxygen), to oxidize; N.L. part. adj. fumaroxidans, oxidizing fumarate (the ability to oxidize fumarate played an important role in the isolation and physiological characterization of this bacterium).

Syntrophobacter pfennigii Wallrabenstein et al. 1996, sp. nov.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. pfennigii, of Pfennig; named after Norbert Pfennig, a German microbiologist who contributed substantially to the understanding of syntrophic relationships and of the physiology of sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain DB (maintained as a coculture with Desulfovibrio sp. strain G-11; coculture = DSM 2805) = DSM 2805M (monoculture isolated from Syntrophobacter wolinii coculture DSM 2805).

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. wolinii, of Wolin; named after Meyer J. Wolin, an American microbiologist who contributed substantially to the understanding of interspecies hydrogen transfer.
