Thermithiobacillus Kelly and Wood 2000, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Thermithiobacillaceae Garrity et al. 2005).
Type species: ¤ Thermithiobacillus tepidarius (Wood and Kelly 1985) Kelly and Wood 2000.
Etymology: L. pl. n. thermae, warm baths; Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; L. masc. n. bacillus, a small rod; N.L. masc. n. Thermithiobacillus, warmth-loving sulfur rodlet.

Basonym: ¤ Thiobacillus tepidarius Wood and Kelly 1985.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. tepidarius, of or belonging to tepid water or to a tepid bath.
