Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; L. fem. n. clava, stick, staff, cudgel, club; N.L. fem. n. Thioclava, sulfur-oxidizing swollen rod.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. pacifica, pacific, peacemaking, and, by extension, pertaining to the Pacific Ocean, where the type strain was isolated.
