Type species: ¤ Thiorhodovibrio winogradskyi Overmann et al. 1993.
Recommended three-letter abbreviation: Trv. (see the file ¤ "Three-letter code for abbreviations of generic names").
Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; Gr. n. rhodon, the rose; L. v. vibro, to set in tremulous motion, move to and fro, vibrate; N.L. masc. n. vibrio, that which vibrates, and also a bacterial genus name of bacteria possessing a curved rod shape (Vibrio); N.L. masc. n. Thiorhodovibrio, rose vibrio with sulfur.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. winogradskyi, of Winogradsky, named for S.N. Winogradsky, a Russian microbiologist, who did the first comprehensive studies on the purple sulfur bacteria.
