Coprococcus Holdeman and Moore 1974, genus.
Type species: ¤ Coprococcus eutactus Holdeman and Moore 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. kopros, excrement, feces; N.L. masc. n. coccus (fromGr. n. kokkos) berry; N.L. masc. n. Coprococcus, fecal coccus.

Coprococcus catus Holdeman and Moore 1974, species.
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 27761 = VPI C6-61.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AB038359.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. catus (sic), clever, referring to unusual property of producing large quantities of both propionate and butyrate.

Note: The etymology provided by Holdeman and Moore is the following: L. adj. ca'tus clever [referring to the unusual property of producing large quantities of both propionic
and butyric acids]. However, in Latin, the adjective catus -a -um means: either sharp to the hearing, clear-sounding, shrill; or (in a good sense) clear-sighted, intelligent, sagacious, wise; or (in a bad sense) sly, crafty, cunning, artful.
Coprococcus comes Holdeman and Moore 1974, species.
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 27758 = VPI C1-38.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: EF031542.
Etymology: L. n. comes, companion, fellow traveller (referring to the presence of the species in human feces).

Coprococcus eutactus Holdeman and Moore 1974, species. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 27759.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: EF031543.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. eutactus (from Gr. masc. adj. eutaktos), orderly, well-disciplined (referring to the uniform reactions of the different strains).
