Coprothermobacter Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Coprothermobacter proteolyticus (Ollivier et al. 1985) Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993.
Etymology: Gr. n. kopros, excrement, ordure, manure; Gr. adj. thermos, warm; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Coprothermobacter, a thermophilic rod from manure.

Coprothermobacter platensis Etchebehere et al. 1998, sp. nov.
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain 3R = DSM 11748.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: Y08935.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. platensis, pertaining to Rio de la Plata, a river between Uruguay and Argentina, the region where the strain was isolated.

Coprothermobacter proteolyticus (Ollivier et al. 1985) Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain BT = ATCC 35245 = DSM 5265.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: X69335.
Basonym: ¤ Thermobacteroides proteolyticus Ollivier et al. 1985.
Etymology: Gr. n. proteios (from Gr. adj. protos, first), the first quality (protos was used by Gerhard Johan Mulder in 1838 to coin the French n. protéine); N.L. masc. adj. lyticus (from Gr. masc. adj. lutikos), able to loose, able to dissolve; N.L. masc. adj. proteolyticus, proteolytic.
