Etymology: Gr. fem. n. Dêmêtêr, Greek female god of agriculture and wives; L. fem. suff. -ia, suff. denoting belonging to; N.L. fem. n. Dernetria, belonging to Dêmêtêr, intended to mean a bacterium being responsible for fertility.
