Type species: ¤ Desulfocella halophila Brandt et al. 1999.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); L. fem. n. cella, a store-room, a chamber, and in biology a cell; N.L. fem. n. Desulfocella, sulfate-reducing cell.
